- IMDb Labs, IMDb data
Popcorn IQ is a movie and TV trivia game I designed and built, powered by IMDb data. It started in 2025 as a quiz prototype that ran right on IMDb title and name pages, and in 2026 it moved to IMDb Labs, where IMDb tries out new ideas with fans.
How it plays
Pick a title, a person or an interest, then race a 45-second clock through 20 questions built from IMDb data: images, videos, quotes and trivia. Interest quizzes turn IMDb’s genres, subgenres and franchises, like Marvel and John Wick, into playable sets. A Daily Kernel quiz gives fans a reason to come back every day.
Badges
Badges are what keep people playing. You climb five ranks with lifetime points, earn skill badges for streaks and perfect runs, collect badges for finishing sets and exploring interests, and find a hidden soundtrack badge in quizzes that secretly play a film’s real score. Day Streak badges multiply your points when you come back. Each one unlocks with its own full-screen moment.
Your profile
Your profile keeps your rank, your total points and every badge you’ve earned, and the badges screen shows what’s still locked so you always know what to chase next.
How I built it
I built Popcorn IQ with AI coding tools, from the question engine that turns IMDb data into dozens of question types to the badge system and a real-time multiplayer mode called Kernel Klash.
